Interview Tom Hoops
- Bonjour Tom, pouvez-vous nous raconter sommairement votre parcours?
Bonjour tout le monde, je photographie principalement des gens, un peu de la Mode et des beaux art. Je devine être davantage reconnu pour mon travail sur les portraits et les scènes de la rue.
- Qu’est-ce qui vous motive le plus dans votre travail de photographe?
Avoir l’opportunité de faire de belles rencontres avec des gens très intéressants. J’ai rencontré des personnes stupéfiantes qui ont de belles histoires à raconter.
- Pouvez-vous en dire plus sur votre métier (contrats, publications) sur une année type?
Mon temps est divisé entre les shootings, la réalisation, l’édition et le marketing. En plus de cela j’ai besoin de rencontrer directement les clients et les éditeurs. Répondre aux emails et toutes les choses qu’une personne doit entreprendre pour faire tourner son petit business.
- Retouchez vous vos photos?
Pas toujours mais souvent. Cela dépend en fait du sujet et de la finalité du produit. Je suis très heureux lorsque cela ressort parfaitement à la prise de vue mais bien souvent, je ne résiste à manipuler l’image.
- Combien de temps cela vous prend t-il? Et quel traitement faites-vous d’ordinaire?
Cela me prend entre 5 minutes et 5, 6 heures pour une photo bien particulière. Un travail sur la mode requiert bien souvent beaucoup plus de travail d’édition et de retouche, spécialement pour la peau. Pour certains modèles, certains composites demandent aussi un peu de travail supplémentaire.
- Pouvez-vous nous raconter un shooting atypique ou un moment spécial que vous avez en tête?
Je peux mais je ne le ferai pas, le prochain shooting que j’ai en tête implique un animal et un modèle qui je l’espère sera une réussite.
- Pouvez-vous décrire une photo dont vous êtes particulièrement fier, par le contexte, la technique ou le sens qu’elle dégage.?
Je suis fier de mes travaux dans leur globalité, certains plus que d’autres. Pour moi c’est l’intensité dans un cliché qui fait se démarquer une photo. Je suis très fier du travail effectué avec Martin, je pense que nous avons créé un travail visuel très fort. Ce travail sera publié prochainement et les détails peuvent être consultés sur mon blog.
- Où peut-on admirer vos photos ?
Mon site et mon blog sont deux bons moyens pour suivre mon travail.

- Hello Tom, can you tell us about your career?
Hi there, well i shoot people mainly, a little fashion and a little fine art thrown in for good measure. I guess I’m best known for my portrait work and street portraiture.
- What’s most exciting in your job?
Having the opportunity to meet some very interesting people. Iv’e met some amazing individuals with some great stories to tell.
- Can you describe your job – contracts, publishing… – on a typical year
My time is split between shooting, editing, printing and marketing. On top of that I need to meet clients and editors. Respond to emails and all the other things someone needs to do to run a small business.
- What photographic materials do you often use?
Not sure what you mean?
- Do you touch up your shots ?
Not always but often. It really depends on the subject and the end product. I’m very happy when it’s perfect straight out of the camera but often i can’t resist tweaking here and there also.
- How long does it take? And what do you usually do?
It takes between 5 mins and 5-6 hours on any particular photo. fashion work generally requires much more editing and touch up,especially on the skin. For models some compositing is also required and maybe even a bit of manipulation.
- Can you tell us about a typical shooting or a special shooting you have in mind ?
I can but i won’t, next shoot I have in mind involves an animal and a model i expect it to be quite raw. watch this space.
- Can you describe and tell us about a photo (the context, the technic, the sense…) wich you are proud of it ?
I’m proud of all my work, some more than others. For me it’s about intensiity in the shoot, more intense the better. My work with Martin or M I’m very proud of and i think we have created some visually strong work. That work will be published shortly and details can be found on my blog.

Vos photos sont d’une grande qualité, évidemment en noir et blanc. Comme vous arrivez avec précision à prendre sur le vif les êtres. C’est très artistique. J’aime beaucoup et je vais m’en inspirer.
